Georgia Blueberries Are Sweet!!
The Blueberries are ripe in Georgia. Trust me when I tell you that they taste great!! Blueberry plants grow extremely well in the state of Georgia. If you decide to plant, make sure that you purchase multiple varities of blueberry plants and locate each hole for your plants approximately 5 - 6 feet from each other. Make sure to prune your plants each winter. I suggest that you prune in mid January. That worked well for me as you can see.
I planted three different varities of blueberries about 3 - 4 years ago. All three plants were absolutely loaded with berries this year. We have picked several pounds of blueberries thus far and there are still more berries yet to ripen. They make for a wonderful snack, are awesome on cereal in the morning and don't forget to make a pie. Still working on my wife to help with the pie deal :-).
Blueberries are actually members of the Rhododendron family of plants. They require acidic soil, and experts suggest your plants will flourish best when the acidic levels in your soil are within the 4.8 to 5.5 pH range. When soil pH is higher than 5.5 or lower than 4.8 the plants simply will not grow or produce very well. Blueberries like nitrogen, but, are considered to have a low nitrogen requirement. We suggest that you utilize organic fertilizers as most blueberry bushes thrive with natural organic nutrients. We also suggest that you plant them in direct sunlight. Our three blueberry plants get sun all day long.
Water is extremely important for your plants. Without it, the berries produced by your plants tend to be small and sour. With sufficient water, our berries have always been plump and sweet. We created water catch basins around each of our plants and then filled in the catch basins with cypress mulch. That approach has worked extremely well for us. The plants seem happy and the berry production would seem to indicate we got it right.
